Hypersonic Wind Tunnel
Aerodynamic Studies
The Calspan Channel 9 Hypersonic Test Facility is presently configured with a 15 inch diameter freejet nozzle for aerodynamic flow studies. Mach numbers may be set between M = 6.5 and M = 9.5.
Nozzle Performance
Channel 9 may be configured for direct connect nozzle performance testing using a 3-component force balance. Channel 9 supported the NASP program in this configuration.
Hypersonic Studies
Channel 9 can be utilized to conduct heat flux and other studies at hypersonic conditions. Prior tests have operated at M = 7, 11, and 14 conditions.
- High pressure air (2500 psia) passes through a cored brick regenerative heater
- Flow is mixed with cool air from storage to produce the desired operating temperature.
- A fast opening “hot valve” initiates and terminates the flow.
- An exhaust system consisting of a diffuser, aftercooler, and 33,000 ft3 vacuum sphere provides the pressure ratio to maintain test conditions.
