The External Balance is designed to measure six components of force and moment with very high precision while located outside of the wind tunnel test section. The External Balance is designed to measure moments about a point at or near the tunnel centerline. This wind tunnel balance is designed to be compact, yet rigid. The natural frequencies are high and the deflections are extremely low. Models are attached to the balance by a variety of support systems. External balances include semi-span and platform balances. Calspan has the expertise to help you define your external balance system and then design, manufacture, calibrate and integrate the system into your test section.
The Semi-Span Pedestal balance is fabricated from a single piece of material. There is a hole through the center for model services. It has extreme load capacities with minimum deflections
The platform balance can be of single or multi-piece construction, measuring 6 forces. The natural frequencies are high and the deflections are very low.
