May 19, 2022

Calspan is proud to announce that Marco Furlan has received a prestigious research award at the Tire Technology Expo and Conference in Germany. The Young Tire Scientist of the Year Award recognizes upcoming researchers in the tire industry. This year’s winner, Marco Furlan, is a Sr. Modeling and Simulation Engineer at Calspan’s Tire Research Facility. He works on both internal and external projects focusing on novel tire simulation methods. The judging panel recognized Marco’s recent work on tire friction prediction using neural networks, coupled with the application of Calspan’s recent Dynamic Contact Patch Pressure test data to produce real-time capable and highly accurate thermo-mechanical tire models. This type of tire modeling is becoming increasingly popular in the automotive industry to accelerate product development of tires and vehicles. In parallel, Marco is finishing up his Ph.D. studies at Loughborough University which focuses on characterization of rubber and road surfaces that influence tire grip.
