June 28, 2016 | Buffalo, New York – Calspan Aerospace has successfully completed a flight test program to demonstrate the feasibility of carrying and operating a U.S. Navy Aerial Refueling Store (ARS) on their company-owned Gulfstream G-III Airborne Testbed. The ARS is typically carried by U.S. Navy F/A-18’s to refuel other aircraft.
Calspan is under contract to Engility Corporation to assist with ARS technology development for the Naval Air Systems Command. The flight demonstration was successfully completed while flying in the Military Operating Areas over Lake Ontario. During the flight test, the ARS was powered up and the refueling hose and drogue were successfully extended and retracted multiple times. This flight test clears the way for further testing which is scheduled to commence in the fall of 2016.
“This flight test milestone paves the way for using the G-III as a surrogate tanker to support ARS technology development.” said Calspan CEO, Owner and Test Pilot, Lou Knotts.
Calspan’s G-III is believed to be the first business jet in aviation history to carry an ARS and deploy a hose and drogue in flight.
