A Summer to Remember

This summer, 13 interns from six different schools across the U.S. participated in Calspan’s competitive internship program.

Over the course of the summer, interns participated in eleven different workshops led by industry experts. These opportunities for professional growth covered topics such as personal branding, resume building, corporate finance, and best practices for corporate presentations. In addition to these learning opportunities, interns worked together giving back to the community through a full day of community service. The 2019 internship class helped to beautify the exterior of a group home for Homespace, an organization that assists at-risk young women and their children. Over the course of a day, Calspan was able to help plant numerous flowers, clean up unwanted debris and weeds, and clean up the play space for children. Homespace helps Buffalo area youth (ages 14-21) forge a better life for themselves and their children by providing a variety of services geared towards self-sufficiency and parenting.

Internship positions spanned Calspan’s Buffalo and Niagara Falls locations, including our wind tunnel and flight research group, tire research, corporate, and facilities groups. Each participant was immersed in the day to day workflow, and by summer’s end had completed a capstone presentation to management with their significant projects and contributions to the company. Summer intern projects for the 2019 group included implementing a Security Incident and Event Management (SIEM) tool, a wind tunnel humidity study to determine repeatability and reliability of test conditions and data, video production of engineering capabilities across all of Calspan, and installation of smart meters on Calspan campus to limit energy use. These summer-long projects involved mastery in professional programs such as AutoCAD, Elastic Stack, and the Adobe Suite, as well as collaboration between various business units, and independent research to facilitate the best possible outcomes.

Calspan is proud to foster the next generation of engineers and pioneers of innovation. Past interns have gone on to pursue careers with companies such as Lockheed Martin, Amazon, CUBRC, and of course Calspan.
