Exciting things are happening at Calspan in Buffalo, NY. A brand new, totally enclosed Crash Lab is entering the final phases of construction.
November 2016 marked the start of construction on the 58,000 sq-ft building. Since then, the completely steel frame exterior, interior drywall, electric, and heating system have been installed. The finished product will feature two crash halls each with their own secure preparation bays, an instrumentation and calibration laboratory, and private customer facilities. This brings all functions of a crash test, from storage and preparation to the final crash event, under one roof. The co-location of core functions has been fundamental to the design of this highly secure and efficient test facility.
The new crash lab will allow for a high volume of tests to take place all within a private, climate controlled environment. Prior to the new crash lab, crash testing at Calspan was performed outdoors and was therefore restricted to fit within conducive weather conditions. Calspan’s open-air track will remain functional for tests that are best suited for an outdoor environment. The addition of the new crash lab increases Calspan’s testing capacity, removes the variable of poor weather conditions, and continues to support global transportation safety.
